PROFESSIONAL TOOLKIT: New Camera Kit

Learning the equipment you have is a useful skill as a Director, to better understand your advantages and limitations. This is why paying attention to the camera induction was a must.

This time we are working with the Sony EX-1, a powerful but slightly outdated camera (considering the recording medium)

However, we had two major upgrades to this camera:

  • A Nikon lens adapter &
  • A Atomos Samurai Blade external recorder
The use of a lens adapter is pretty self explanatory: More creative possibilities, shallower depth of field...

But the external recorder solved a major issue that the camera's built in recording medium has: Compression

Because the image is coming out of a clean SDI signal, and is being compressed using Apple ProRes instead of the build in XDCAM cards, the result is a much more usable image when it comes to post production.

This is really important to us as we will be using Greenscreen, so we need as much information as possible.

Also, the Samurai Blade allows for shot favorites, therefore i can pick my best takes as they are happening, and that metadata will appear in the edit.

In general, i now feel relatively comfortable with this kit, and so does Rob (Cinematographer).

Some say he’s half man half fish, others say he’s more of a seventy/thirty split. Either way he’s a fishy bastard.
