REFLECTIONS: Screening Notes
"The Conquest of Happiness" by Oliver Pietch
I really found this film interesting as it's creator has tried to portray each drugg's effect visually, and has split the video in to different chapters based on each drugg's effect. I especially like the pattern that occurs with each drug's portrayal: Taking the drug - the experience - the after effects of the drug. Overall i found this film good, and it gave me a bigger insight in to why people do drugs, and their negative effects.
"Rock My Religion" by Dan Graham
I have mixed opinions about this film. At a first glance i did not like this film at all, as it did not manage to grab my attention throughout the entire film. Degraded images behind lines and lines of text, combined with fragmented audio does not lend itself to a pleasant viewing experience. After a bit of research however, i've discovered that some of this degradation is intentional. The whole film is essentially a video essay about the connections between rock music and religion. However, i strongly believe that there is a fine line between "Innovative" and "Weird", and i'm still not sure if i know where this is at. However, if the artist who made this film wanted to raise questions about the film itself, and create the need to conduct more research about the films contents, then he has succeeded...
We were also asked to research Christian Marclay. After looking at his work i really liked "The Clock". Similar to the first video we watched today, he uses film clips to create a piece that explores time through cinema. An idea of his that stood out to me was that the film was played in synchronization with the actual time, so if it was 3pm in real time, than all of the clocks on the film would be showing 3pm.
