PROFESSIONAL TOOLKIT: Second Group Meeting and Project Management

During our second group meeting we had a second look at the synopsis, and Dowan wrote a script that we could work on:
INT.LIVING ROOM.DAY
THE MAN ’Middle Aged’ Slopping back on the sofa dazed into
the commercials playing on the TV. With the remote in one
hand and a beer in the other. Within the background we see a
lack of personal belongings, dirty dishes on the table and on
the wall a grey patch of what use to hang there. THE MAN
flicks through the channels until he hears one about a new
phone being released. He blankly stares into the TV taking a
sip of his beer.
TV COMMERCIAL
(Roughly what is said, can be
changed of course to take the
piss out of consumerism)
Are you bored of the phone you just
bought? Do you want to Impress your
fake friends on facebook? Do you
want to splash a lot of cash on a
phone that does the same thing as
your old phone does?
THE MAN continues to stare aimlessly into the TV, taking
another sip of his beer, and burps as he starts to seem
satisfied.
TV COMMERCIAL
If your answer is YES, YES, AND
YES. Well this is the phone for
you. Order online now and receive
1% off YOUR phone.
(Fast Dialogue you hear at the
end of adverts)
Terms and conditions apply. Please
do not read them as we will screw
you over.
THE MAN smiles blindly at the TV and picks up his phone in
order to purchase the new phone just advertised. Looking
down at his phone we see THE MAN purchase the phone at a
ridiculous prize (£600 for example) After the purchase he
logs into Facebook and makes a statues about the phone.
THE MAN
(V.O)
Just brought the new I-diot 7
phone. Best purchase I’ve made in a
long time.
THE MAN continues to stare at the phone screen when
instantly he starts to receive several likes and comments.
FACEBOOK FRIENDS
(V.O’S)
- Well done mate! - I love that
phone! - You’re so lucky! - OMG I
want that phone.
As he continues to receive likes and comments as he smiles
ecstatically. Seconds later we hear the sound of THE MAN’S
doorbell ring. With his phone still in his hands -
POSTMAN
(SHOUTING)
DELIVERY!
He instantly throws it behind him as he gets up to answer
the door. We follow the phone as it lands into a big pile of
phones on the floor.

Also mentioned were sources of visual inspiration. One main aspect that kept coming up and firstly mentioned by Rob at the first meeting was Black Mirror.

Personally i really like the dull color palette used.

We bounced around ideas about how things like the phone pile or the set could be done, and we also all told each other our preferences in our group role we would like.

After the group meeting had ended i remembered that i have a project management system set up for my own personal projects, and it could be used to help us keep track of what we are doing.

I created user logins for everyone in our group and set up a project so that we could all be assigned tasks and keep track of deadlines
The main project overview at http://projects.creativityfilms.gr
Also when a certain user logs in, at the homepage they will be presented with their current tasks:

Hopefully this will help us speed up the process and avoid wasting time.

Some say he’s half man half fish, others say he’s more of a seventy/thirty split. Either way he’s a fishy bastard.

  1. hi team, I remember in the initial workshop there was a discussion about a world with no art - living in a featureless space. I am guessing that the environment you describe is referring to this. I read the written scene as referring to the consumerist, continual redundancy of possessions of our contemporary life. Will there be references to the no art idea or is this no longer relevant? Has art been replaced by the latest must have gadgets? perhaps you could flesh out the meaning behind the scene a bit more for me here. It would be good to do some solid research for visual references too.

I wonder why you have chosen a middle aged man - he seems a bit of a stereotype slob. If you clarified your 'mission statement' would it be possible to construct a character with a stronger identity? Who does he represent? What's your view on the pressure of consumerism on your own age group? I feel that if you collectively dug a bit deeper into the meaning behind your outline you could move this idea to a whole new level. A great starting point though!

My first thought when I heard your idea was of the Richard Hamilton 1959 montage picture 'What makes today's homes so different so appealing? where we are constantly bombarded with new desirable possessions.
Here's a link to the Tate (this is a later version)

The bleak grey 1984 type world seems at odds with bright flashy buy me in your face world we live in. I would be interested to understand more about your choices on this.

I had a look in the room at the back of G12 where all the flats are kept. I was thinking of having a chat with Chris the lighting man on Friday first thing about 9.30am to get an idea of how the room could be constructed. Please come along if you are interested

    thanks very much
