REFLECTIONS: Group Production Meeting #1 - Refrence Films Screening
So, during our first production meeting our general goal was to get a rough idea of the style and themes for the project.
The film is about someone who get's depressed over an on-line break up and due to his depression begins to reminisce about his time together with his partner, however as he has never actually met her this takes the form of a digital world, which slowly breaks in his mind to meld fantasy with reality in his head as a coping mechanism.
We want the film to start of as a conventional narrative, but during the dream-like sequence it will become more and more experimental.
First we watched "Aku No Hana (The Flowers of Evil") to see how it has dealt with the theme of depression and repetition. Also whilst viewing it we liked the dullness used in the rotoscoped animation, and we are thinking of doing some tests to see if something similar will suit our film.
Then we watched a segment of "The End of Evangelion", to try and get a feeling of the fast paced and disorienting editing style rob was going for at the point where the film's character get's depressed in the digital world.
The scene we focused on is where all humanity merges, inducing a dream-like sequence to the lead character, who flicks through past memories.
We decided that during our next meeting we would get some visual tests put together to see if any of the above concepts fit in to our film

Aku No Hana's flat animation style seems to be really close to the un-nerving un-canny valley... |
